Death of the slow dance

The slow dance has been one of those things that as little girls we dream of doing one day. If not at our high school dance than at least with the man we fall in love with on our wedding day. I was fortunate enough that I got to experience slow dancing from grade school straight through to my younger 20’s.  But where has the slow dance gone nowadays?

In my early 20’s, I can remember going to bars where the night would at least end with one or two slow songs. This was the chance to find the guy you’ve been eyeballing all night and make your move. Some of you girls out there of course are not living in the 20th century and would rather wait for the guy to ask which is perfectly fine… (P.S. men love assertive women.)

Typical dancing night out with the crew. Putting your hands in the air seems appropriate given any song...

That being said, the slow dance has recently died in the last two years. Maybe it’s because the bump and grind has taken over and the two or three hours you have to dance at a club are taken up by the latest in hip-hop, house, and fast-paced top 40. In fact I would argue that the only place you can find a decent slow song would be at a legion or a special event like a wedding or a 40th wedding anniversary.

Congrats Rip you graduated. Now find me a cute friend to get my "unchained melody" on with!

This past weekend I traveled to Kingston to celebrate my little cousin’s graduation from Royal Military College. My family and I attended his graduation ball- much like a prom only with young men dressed up in military suits and alcoholic beverages (mainly wine) being allowed. The first thing that came to my mind was: “This is my chance to slow dance!” I was so very excited at the prospect of a Celine Dion power ballad blaring from the speakers as I slow dance with a cute new military grad.

NEWSFLASH: This did not happen.  They did play a slow song and a few couples did dance (lucky bastards), but I was not so fortunate

Me and my friend Lindsay at a 50th birthday party.. held at a legion. This is our chance! Seize the slow dance!

What do we need to do to revive the slow dance? Where did it go and why? I guess my next outing will be at the local legion to try and squander up a waltz. It probably won’t be romantic and with a partner showing off his new hip-replacement. Maybe I need to start a petition?

Think about it.
