Can a friend call dibs?

I took my dogs to the park this past weekend with one of my best girlfriends. We had a moment where we both saw the same guy and immediately fell smitten. In all fairness, she pointed him out first …but really did this matter? She ended up talking to him after her Maltese tried to attack his Great Dane. Her dog has to be one of the bravest most vengeful little creatures you’d ever seen.  After she apologized for her dog Louis’ behavior, the beautiful stranger assured her it was okay and that dogs have to stand their own ground. Meanwhile I was in the background screaming at mine to try and facilitate a play date with the 6 ft 2 stranger’s Great Dane.

Louis- My friend’s key to chatting up the 6 ft 2 beautiful stranger. Louis may look like a small innocent Q-tip but don’t be fooled.

NEWSFLASH: This did not happen as my dog Winston barely knows how to sit let alone how to strategically play with dogs that have cute owners.

As we left for home, we laughed it off and I proceeded to tell her we should be coming to the park around this time every Saturday. I also mentioned that I had hoped to see the 6 ft 2 stranger again.

What would happen next is a real treat. My friend told me that should I pursue the 6 ft 2 stranger, I would be violating girl code as she had ‘called’ him first. Really? All jokes aside, is this really violating girl code? In certain circumstances – Yes – but in this case I would think not seeing that there was little to no interaction, no phone numbers swapped, and no flirting from either party.

In the case a friend has her eye on a guy AND legitimately likes him AND there are interactions between both parties AND the legitimate interest (beyond physical attraction) is there then I think it is a no-brainer. Girl code is definitely in effect. I will be back to the dog park and should he be there, I will not think twice about throwing the ball his way 😉

Eric Dane. Another Great Dane.

I leave you with a photo of Eric Dane- another Great Dane.

  1. I think we’ve all been both of those girls. The one who wants to keep the guy for herself even if she does nothing about it, and the one who is willing to actually go after him.

Let us know how it unfolds!
